Friday Musings—09/08/24

How’s your week going? Hit reply and let me know—I read every email.
What's new with me
I fell down the stairs two Fridays ago and injured my wrist and ankle, but luckily, nothing too serious. Unfortunately, this means no hiking in the mountains, which is a bummer. During the first week, I could barely do any yoga either. However, I found a yoga routine I used after my knee surgery four years ago, which doesn’t require putting any weight on my feet or wrists. As the teacher says in the video, I was able to find joy and appreciation in being able to move and reconnect with my body despite my current limitations.
As is often the case, what happens on the mat carries over to life off the mat. Am I disappointed I can't go on the walks I had planned? Yes, I am. But I realized I can still find joy in enjoying the fresh air, being surrounded by nature, and most importantly, escaping the heat trap that is the city in summer!

What would they say?
One thing I can certainly do despite the fall is read, and I have a pile of books to delve into, thanks to the local library. I recently finished Teddy Bear by Georges Simenon. I won’t give away the story in case you decide to read it. All I’ll say is that at the beginning of the book, the main character wonders what the people he encounters would say if they were called to testify about him. That led me to a thought experiment: What would they say about me? What's the impression I give people? How often do I come across as kind and smiling, and how often do I seem anxious and withdrawn instead?
In yoga, they encourage you to be mindful of the energy you carry and the overall "vibe" you give out. This thought experiment was another reminder of that. What do you think people would say about you?
Life will reach back to you
I really enjoyed this interview with Gladys, introduced as "the world's happiest 103-year-old." A centenarian and still-consulting doctor, Gladys is sharp as a tack—she does podcasts, writes books, gives talks, and is just overall very active.
What's your favorite piece of advice from the interview? Mine was, "Reach for life. If you’re reaching for life, life reaches back to you."
Real Intelligence
In an age where people constantly rely on AI and smartphones to look up information, a leading Canadian academic is urging the public to nurture their brain health instead. Professor Mohamed I. Elmasry, an expert in microchip design and artificial intelligence, believes that 9 simple daily habits can significantly reduce the risk of age-related dementia.
Are there any habits you'd like to adopt? I don’t like afternoon naps, but I do read aloud sometimes (because I have fun trying to play the different characters!). I thought people would think I'm a bit wacky if they knew, but it turns out I’m just cultivating my real intelligence 😀
Quote of the week ✍️
"The wise adapt themselves to circumstances, as water moulds itself to the pitcher." (Chinese Proverb)
As always, I welcome your insights or questions. Which musing was your favorite? What topics would you like to see covered in future newsletters? Any other suggestions? Let me know in the comments or send me an email. Don't forget to share this with someone who may find it interesting.
